I spent a year out in a Birmingham town called Smallheath. It was neither small, nor a heath. There were other things that weren’t quite what they seemed that year too. Our team leader, who had a poster outside her room which said “Worry is unbelief parading in disguise” lied to us about a massive worry in her life that only came out half way through the year.

Perhaps the fact that the poster was outside her room didn’t help her? I don’t know.

All of us struggle with worry from time to time. Perhaps about finances – “How can I afford this big bill?” or the welfare of our children – “How can I stop her dressing so provocatively?” – or our elderly parent – “am I seeing him enough?” – or our husband – “am I supporting him through this difficult season?”

What are you worried about? What are you secretly trying your best to let go of, but it keeps coming back?

Let me encourage you with something very simple.

I read a comment today that said this: “All our worries come down to two things: that we won’t get what we need, or that we’ll lose what we’ve got.”

At the root of most worry I can think of, is FEAR.
Yet we are told in the Bible that perfect love casts that out, aren’t we??
Your heavenly Father KNOWS what you need. He also knows what you have got. More than this, He knows how to help you hang on to what you have.

So today, whatever you are anxious about… give it afresh to God. Don’t let it get the better of you. Mentally move the poster to the INSIDE of your room that reminds you that ‘worry is unbelief’ and choose today to believe in the God who has good plans for you; who longs to do you good and who believes in you. Nothing can separate us from the love of God… and that includes our own tendency to worry.
