The other night my kids and I were having a snuggle on the sofa watching a film. We were cosied up under our duvets with our Pj’s on. All was well with the world.

Esther suddenly jumped up onto my knee for a cuddle. She leant into me and gave me a long, comforting squeeze. “I love you mummy!” she whispered, “Big much.” She gesticulated to show a large amount with her little body before burying herself back down into me.

It made me think.
You can get a child to say “I love you.” But you can’t make them mean it.

Esther was not saying how she felt about me because I had just tidied her room, or made her a cake, or ironed her favourite butterfly dress. She was telling me she loved me because of who I am not what I had done. That felt amazing.

How often do we tell God how amazing He is just “because”? It is easy to praise God when He has done something specific and incredible. But do we do it just out of a sense of gratitude for WHO HE IS?

Maybe we need to today. Big much.
