I lost count of the amount of times I heard the phrase. Tom was like a broken record for the first hour of our five hour journey. “Are we nearly there yet Daddy? Daddy, are we nearly there?” Each time, he recieved the same answer. “No. We still have a long way to go.” Eventually he got bored of asking the question and changed tack.
“Can we play ‘I spy?” he said, hopefully. So we all joined in, looking out of the window to see what we could spot as we sped up the motorway.

It feels like I’ve been asking God for a long time, “Are we nearly there yet?” and I too have recently decided to play a game to while away the journey. ‘I spy’ is much more fun.

Today I imagined God playing with me:

God: I spy with my omnipotent eye something beginning with…. T…
Me: Tomato?
God: No
Me: Toboggan?
God: No
Me: Timpani?
God: Er… No..
Me: Toadstool?
God: no! Think more abstractly…
Me: …. Oh… Is it Trust?
God: Yes!
Me: But what does trust look like?
God: Like this…
Me: But I can’t see anything
God: Exactly

Maybe like me you need to stop asking God if you’re nearly there and start asking what you are meant to do with the journey instead.
